What are Neuromodulators & Neurotoxins?
Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Daxxify are FDA-approved neuromodulators used to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the underlying facial muscles. They are most commonly used to treat frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet.
What’s the difference between Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Daxxify?
Formulation & Composition
- Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA): Contains protective proteins along with the active neurotoxin.
- Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA): Also includes accessory proteins but has a smaller molecular size than Botox.
- Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA): Naked neurotoxin — does not contain accessory proteins. This may reduce risk of antibody formation over time.
- Daxxify (daxxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm): Formulated with a stabilizing peptide (RTP004) instead of human serum albumin. This may contribute to its longer duration.
Onset of Action
- Dysport: Fastest onset, often within 1–3 days.
- Botox: Typically takes effect in 3–5 days.
- Xeomin: Similar to Botox, onset in 3–5 days.
- Daxxify: Onset around 1–2 days, but full effects may still take a week.
Duration of Effect
- Botox: Lasts about 3–4 months.
- Dysport: Also lasts 3–4 months, but sometimes slightly shorter or longer depending on area treated.
- Xeomin: Typically lasts 3–4 months.
- Daxxify: Longest-lasting — up to 6 months or more in many patients.
Diffusion / Spread
- Dysport: Tends to spread more than Botox due to smaller protein size — beneficial for larger areas but can risk diffusion to unwanted areas.
- Botox & Xeomin: More precise targeting.
- Daxxify: Similar precision to Botox, but with longer duration.
FDA Approvals
- All four are FDA-approved for glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows).
- Botox is also FDA-approved for more aesthetic and medical uses than the others, such as migraines, hyperhidrosis, and muscle spasticity.
- Daxxify is newer (FDA approved in 2022) and currently approved only for aesthetic use in glabellar lines.
What areas can be treated?
Common treatment areas include:
- Frown lines (between the brows)
- Neck bands
- Forehead lines
- Crow’s feet (around the eyes)
- Bunny lines (nose wrinkles)
- Lip flip (upper lip)
- Chin dimpling
- Jawline slimming (masseter muscles)
Does the treatment hurt?
Most patients report minimal discomfort. A very fine needle is used, and the injections are quick. Numbing cream or ice can be applied to make the treatment more comfortable.
Lam Medical uses highly effective chilled-air and distraction techniques to make the administration of our injectable treatments as pain-free as possible.
Our Results
How long does it take to see results?
You may begin to see changes within 2–5 days, with full results visible by 10–14 days post-treatment.
How long do results last?
Results typically last 3 to 4 months, but this can vary depending on individual factors like metabolism, muscle strength, and lifestyle habits.
Is there any downtime?
There is no significant downtime. You may experience minor swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site, which usually resolves quickly.
What should I do before and after treatment?
Before Treatment:
- Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications (like ibuprofen) for 24–48 hours to reduce bruising.
- Arrive with a clean face, free of makeup.
After Treatment:
- Do not rub or massage the area for at least 24 hours.
- Avoid laying down flat or strenuous activity for 4–6 hours.
- Avoid facials or heat exposure (saunas, tanning) for 24–48 hours.
Are there any side effects?
Most side effects are mild and temporary. They may include:
- Redness or swelling at the injection site
- Bruising
- Headache or mild discomfort
Serious side effects are rare but will be discussed during your consultation.
Who is a good candidate?
Adults who are in good general health and want to reduce dynamic wrinkles caused by facial expressions are great candidates. A consultation is required to determine if this treatment is right for you.
Can I combine Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Daxxify with other treatments?
Yes, you can safely combine neurotoxin treatments like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, or Daxxify with many other aesthetic procedures. In fact, combining treatments is often encouraged to achieve more comprehensive, natural-looking results.
Here are some common treatment combinations:
1. Dermal Fillers
Neurotoxins relax dynamic wrinkles (caused by movement), while fillers restore volume and smooth static lines (present at rest).
Combined, they can rejuvenate the face more completely—think smoother foreheads and fuller cheeks or lips.
2. Medical-Grade Facials & Peels (e.g., DiamondGlow, Chemical Peels)
These treatments improve skin texture, tone, and hydration.
Best scheduled before or a few days after neurotoxin injections to avoid disrupting the placement of the product.
3. Microneedling or RF Microneedling
Helps with texture, scarring, and collagen stimulation.
Safe to combine, but typically spaced 1–2 weeks apart from neurotoxin treatments to prevent spread or uneven results.
4. Laser Treatments (e.g., Laser Genesis, Hair Removal, IPL)
Lasers treat pigment, redness, and skin texture.
Usually performed either before or a few days after neurotoxin injections to minimize swelling or interference.
5. Red Light Therapy
This gentle, non-invasive treatment can be safely combined with neurotoxins to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and enhance skin health.
6. miraDry or EmSculpt Neo
These body and sweat reduction treatments target entirely different systems and can be combined with facial injectables without issue.
